The news of this week I will devote Alvaro, usual this blog, I threw the bait to fish this topic.
There are many legends concerning the sea, and I guess largely because men have always been fascinated by this means and how hard life is in him. One of those legends back to the seventeenth century. Some superstitious sailors believed so in an evil spirit from the depths of the ocean called "Davy Jones". All the "seafarers", no exemptions, IMO some of us of Publio (to understand this phrase must have attended the conference this week in Exponav), mariners of that time, the rendían pleitesía. Even the other evil beings of the ocean, also surrendered to him.
This evil spirit had appeared after the storms and shipwrecks, so to the sailors of that era, Davy Jones embodied all the evil that the sea could offer your guests.
The spirit of this kingdom covered the entire sea. It was believed that somewhere in its domain had a large chest where he kept everything apresaba. On that site would have all kinds of things, from gold and ships, up corpses. The souls of the dead ending at the Bunker will also belonged to this spirit.
Thus, died when a sailor drowned at sea, was said to have gone to Davy Jones chest.
He has written extensively on this spirit and many novels include it in their stories, such as Moby Dick, but surely, who has given him more fame, has been the saga of "Pirates of the Caribbean". In these stories using the words "go to Davy Jones", repeatedly, as a synonym for "going to pique".
The nature of this one is not too clear. For some it is simply the devil incarnate, while others think it is an old pirate sentenced by the devil to live in the deep sea as a cruel punishment, for any wrongdoing on. However, the story seems more true that Davy Jones owes its existence to the legends of sailors and pirates. It is said that the beautiful and capricious sea goddess Calypso and he, had been in love. Such was his love, the bandit and pirate Davy Jones, as evidence of their feelings and their relationship with the sea, agreed to perform the obligations of the goddess, consisting of leading souls who perished in the sea to his rest. This meant not to step on land but once every ten years, but Davy Jones took that burden on the promise that Calypso would compliment the period and so would enjoy his love forever. However, Goddess, treacherous and dangerous as the sea, not kept his promise and Davy Jones, dam of humiliation and excruciating torment, tore the heart and hid it where ever could get Calipso. Freed of her feelings she decided to take revenge on the evil and poured, failing to fulfill the task that had been entrusted to him and thereby allowing the souls of the sailors whom he had killed tirelessly served under his command.
Regarding the origin of the name, could come from "duffy". This name designated a marine spirit of Caribbean tradition, that came from the regions and African traditions. For others it could be a deformed shape by the time the word "devil", in Castilian, the devil. And with regard to the name "Jones", come the famous biblical character who was swallowed by a whale, "Jonah".
So, the legend of this spirit ran long world ports, from the Caribbean to Europe.
